Book Review: The Unrandom Universe: The Latest Scientific Discoveries Will Strengthen Your Faith

Author: Sigmund Brouwer
Spiritual Bias: Christian
Origins Bias: Old Earth Perspective (creationist at some level - perhaps theistic evolutionist)
Rating: Middle of the Road
Level: Basic

Comments: In this book Brouwer explains how many scientific discoveries made during the last 100 years regarding the nature of our universe point to the God of the Bible as its cause. Brouwer is a non-scientist, which is actually a good thing since most books that discuss these kinds of topics are too technical for most readers. Brouwer also holds a Christian worldview that is not threatened by science. Several times during the book Brouwer quotes Maimonides.."conflicts between science and the Bible result from a lack of scientific knowledge or a defective understanding of the Bible." Now specifically there are several good things about this book. There is a clear explanation of the anthropic principle, a good explanation of the science behind Big Bang theory, and good discussion concerning the creation of time. I recommend this book for the origins novice interested in getting a feel for the "Old Earth" creationist position. More technical readers should consider "Creator and the Cosmos".

Summary Quote: "Yet all the questions that science raises about the origins of the universe and the orderliness of natural laws do point to a supernatural explanation. And scientists are extremely hard-pressed to come up with an alternative. For without God, how do you explain from the mathematically impossible "coincidences" in the data behind the anthropic principle, that the laws of physics so perfectly allowed a 15-billion-year proess of creating life? How do you explain a universe that had to know in advance how it would develop to survive past the first 10^-43 seconds of its existence? How do you explain the moment that the universe first burst into time and space from...nothing? And how do you explain why?
